Inktober 2014

So Inktober has come to an end. Its been a fun month. I was able to do one drawing a day. I am glad things like this comes up because it forces me to draw, which is something I should be doing more of. The nice things about this project is the challenge it presents. Drawing in pen slows me down, and makes me think more about my lines before laying them down. Toysrevil did a small QA on me for this project. You can see it here. Below are the daily drawings I did. Some got more time than others. Hopefully this has forced me to develop the habit of drawing daily. I have been posting these on instagram and will be posting future work there as well.

3d Printed mask for Tomorrowworld and Nori's adventure

So I just got back from the largest music festival in the US, Tomorrowworld. This was actually my first music festival, and I wanted to join the festivities by making my own mask for the event. I figured it was a way I could also learn how to 3d print as that is a very important aspect of the direction Nori Toy is going. I picked up a Davinci 1.0 printer due to its print area and resolution and thought I could just design something in a 3d program and go. Here is a short journey of my experience on this project.

After tweaking in Sculptris I brought it into lightwave to scale and add more parts.

I use lightwave 3d 9.5, as I am invested into it, so it is my software of choice. As I get better with 3d I may upgrade to the newest version or consider more software options. The nice thing about lightwave 3d is the real world units it works in. It was not until I looked into file conversions that I found that some software use their own units of measure. I thought I could just design something and print, but there was somewhat of a learning curve ahead. There is a couple of plugins for LW9+ to export STL files. None of them actually produced a file for me. I then downloaded a slew of free/open source 3d programs. I was not keen on any of the interfaces but settled on Google Sketchup. I actually don't model with it, but I use it as a conversion tool. All it needed was a STL plugin, and it was ready to go.
The next issue was to find a file type that I could easily convert into Sketchup. The problem with lightwave is the odd values for exporting files and maintaing scale. Things would get enlarged or shrunk. I values I needed to keep things 1:1, I was unsure of. I was not able to find a lot of documentation on the subject, but I did find some info on the Newtek forums. One member discovered that exporting collada from LW and importing into sketchup did not change the objects scale. So sketchup could be used to just export the STL and bring it into XYZware to print. I actually spent most of my time researching this to get my files right. I got so close on time that rather than fully modeling my own mask, I found this one on thingverse as a base.


Since it was a STL I pulled it into Sketchup and then was able to convert it to an object that could modify in lightwave. It took a long time to load due to its complexity on slower my laptop. Sketchup failed quite a bit, but I finally got it to work. I will likely go back to my desktop for 3d work in the future. Since I am still a novice in LW, I decided to modify it in sculptris. I added some bits, then took it back to lightwave to fine tune and add ports for glow bracelets. Since the mask was designed for the original creators face I had to take some measurements of my own head and then make some adjustments in LW.
Sadly it was not so easy as pushing print and waiting for my model. I had a lot of problems with XYZware likely due to the file size. I had to do some work to repair the file and all sorts of digital black magic to get it to print. It took about 10 hours to print. I even had some supports fail but luckily the design did not sag or collapse.

You can see the mess where some of the supports came loose from the heat bed and the head printed in the air. These strands became part of the glue I made, shown later in this article.

 I was getting closer to my departure so I had to make what I had work. Part of the problem was fitment. I had to use a heat gun to warm up the mask enough to bend a couple of sections. One being the width against my face and the curve of the top overhang. It pressed into the top of my head. I was close on my measurements but did not have the extra space needed for comfort. Considering it was my first attempt it was fairly close. Once the fitment was good I began to remove the supports in the ports with a dremel. It turned out I measured wrong and they were too small. I was able to drill them out, but most did not have walls thick enough to support the glow bracelet. I figured I might as well experiment now. I ground off the connectors and then printed some new ones that did fit properly. I then used acetone to weld them to the mask.

 I had come up with a trick. I threw some thin filament into a cup of acetone and as it melted I got sort of a glue I could paint on and it would bond with the mask and the ports. I wore a vapor mask and goggles while doing this, especially since it took some time to do. While I was at it, I smoothed some of the areas with acetone and a brush. I figured it was all a learning experience so I experimented with all sorts of ideas on this project. Once I finished, I carried everything inside... I accidentally dropped the mask and it split in two. A learning experience, I was not ready for. I ended up loosing a whole day to repair it. I used my acetone weld technique to bond it, and add material to those sections for strength.

Wear safety equipment to protect lungs and brain. It almost looks like it would go well with my mask. 

Next I wanted to smooth it up. I printed at a lower resolution to save time. To clean that up I took a steamer and evaporated some acetone and it smoothed it out some. I did leave it too long, which did manage to damage the repair I did the day before from when the mask split. So I ended up having to redo the repair. I did learn a lot from the acetone smoothing process, but of course it took more time to finish the mask.

I left it too long in the acetone vapors and some areas bubbled up. I had to scrape most of them off, but a valuable lesson, right?
 Since I was short on time for painting I decided to use some fabric glow paint that I already had. I started brushing it on, and as each coat dried I would test it in the dark. I was not getting the results I imagined. The glow was not consistently spread out on the mask, and it seemed to be more intense the thicker the application. After a few more coats I decided just to go wild with all the paints and layer it as thick as I could constantly changing the design. My biggest gripe about the finished green areas is that due to the green and the texture it was a little grotesque. It reminded me a little of swamp thing in those areas. I was not too worried about it, as this mask was meant to be worn at night and the glow would be what I relied on. Once I was settled with the painting I sewed a band on to hold it tightly. Lastly I used some craft foam sheets to add padding inside the mask since it would be held on tightly by the band.

With different types of brushes, I was not able to smoothly apply this paint all that well. 
After a few coats you can see how it was a little ghostly in how it glowed. 
Half way through the application I just started adding the paint in all sorts of patterns on thick layers.

The final result of the mask turned out alright. It survived the flight to Tomorrowworld and being worn at the event. The glow paint needed to be charged and would not last that long. Luckily the light shows from the stages were so bright that a couple bursts of that would charge the mask and it would continue to glow most of the night. Based on what I learned on this adventure of making this mask, I can not move forward with working on my own toy designs and maybe even some cosplay, so stay tuned for more news as I get things made. 

So this trip to Tomorrowworld was also meant to be clay Nori's last adventure before I started development of the design that will go on to be my resin production toy. Sadly due to the mobile networks being overloaded I lost contact with the outside world and my phone was nothing more than a camera. Clay Nori has traveled all over the world in my pocket since he was made last year, and he may get another few photo ops by the time I am finished with the new Nori design, but he will get a special place on my shelves among my favorite toys. Nori X Bob-omb

This is a custom of Nori on a Bob-omb candy toy from the Super Mario Brothers game. I thought it would be a fun cross over. I tried to focus on the fun curry loving aspect of Nori's character. He is a bomb that explodes curry spices. As you can see in the last pic Mario can appreciate this kind of explosion (of flavor).

Thoughtful Toys: LaQ

Welcome to another edition of "Thoughtful Toys." Due to things being busier now and I am revamping how I do things, these reviews will stay mostly the same, but I will not be doing as many custom designs for the sake of the reviews. In light of less amount of builds for the sake of the review I will be doing a new segment that will cover custom builds as I do them. So when I get free time and want to make something out of a reviewed construction toy I will make a single post dedicated to the creation.
Continuing our discussion on construction toys great for inspiring concept design or creative thinking we are covering a Japanese building system called LaQ. I first discovered LaQ at Mitsuwa in Chicago. They actually were somewhat expensive but I took the gamble and bought a couple of the sets. I picked up the frog, which I can not seem to find much on and the Bunny from their Sweet collection. These sat for years. I made the figures they were designed for and stored the extra pieces. I didn't think I would bring this line up due to the price point, but now these are carried at Toysrus and on clearance. A set that normally would had cost 30USD is now under $2. At a price like that I could not pass up buying out their stock at the one store I saw them. TRU carried the Hamicron line, which was either blue jet or a red race car and I ended up with six sets from TRU in addition to the two sets I already had. These actually had about the same amount of pieces as the Bunny set, yet the box was twice the size. The box size was not really necessary considering you get a literal handful of parts. I suppose the size was in part to helping the consumer justify the cost.
Package comparison. I have over 1,200 pieces and unassembled they could fit in an empty tissue box. 

As I messed with the pieces I found there is a limitation in the design. Instinctively I try to make finished looking objects that are fully closed, but that is somewhat unlikely to accomplish beyond making a box. The angles selected for connectors and designs of the main pieces requires one to work in a more simplified style. You have the option with 0, 90, and 120 degrees to connect pieces with. Once you understand their limitations you might spend more time being productive with these figures. I find they are better suited for making stylized characters. So super deformed or something that might inspire a more cartoony look will be easier to achieve with these than something of great detail. That is unless you buy thousands of these and go in a much larger scope. I am not sure these would be strong enough to stay together under the stress of a massive model design though.



The first sets I got were just for their animal forms. The frog had few pieces and at the time I only wanted the bunny kit for the character rather than to make other things. I liked their look and felt sort of like early game polygon art. Rather than the popular pixel art inspired toys, these were like making forms from PS1 era games.

 Rather than making a range of designs I made a single robot. What I felt like these lacked in creative inspiration I felt they made up for in brain training. Due to their limiting designs you had to think far ahead or you were going to loose a lot of progress due to breaking things apart again. The system can be built with as little as one connection but can support up to twelve connections with special pieces. So if you were to make something with many connections, they impact other pieces when you have to take something apart.
I am a robot.
 I spent the most time on the torso largely because of being an open cavity and I could not support it as easily as a rectangular shape. I often broke the design apart while trying to finish other parts. I found to work in segments then press everything together that attached in the same direction the best strategy.

The hamicron line included these large discs that with a little creative work could act as a core for some parts. They are meant to be wheel pieces but I used them as shoulder joints as well. The have a snap in axle type piece but there is no friction on it so I can not keep the arms raised though they are articulated. There are a couple other special pieces from other lines I don't have that might add a little variety in construction methods.

As far as the LaQ line goes, it is quite expensive and somewhat hard to work with. I found myself fairly frustrated during the course of making my design. Not to mention it is pretty limited in relation to other building kit. However, if you can find them on the cheap, they are still a neat little creative tool. I find they are far more useful in respect of challenging you creatively in construction methods as well as creating a form. The end product may not be what your after, but the process goes a long way to improving a designers ability to plan as well as being creative with something full of limitations.

Thoughtful toys: Transformers Construct Bots REVISITED

So some time has passed since I had posted my Construct Bots article, and there is an update to the line. Also since then the previous line has gone on clearance and showed up in places like TJmaxx, Marshalls, and Ross. In other words you can still find lots of the original kits for very affordable prices. If you want more details on those kits you can check out my review here. On note of the old style of kits you can see the Target Exclusive Predaking below. He has a lot of nice armor parts and the dragon necks make for good arms. I used two sets here to give him two dragon hands. The armor bits are more unique vs what we had gotten before and he is a great addition.


With release of the newest Transformers AOE film a new line inspired from the film has come out. I grabbed Lockdown when they first came out. I was excited at first. There are some nice new armor bits. The characters now also come with dinos that turn into armor and provide more parts. As stand alone figures, they are an improvement. They have new core parts that make them more like action figures than before.


Here you can see Predaking and Lockdown without armor. You can see they are now very different. While the new design is more solid, and looks better it has lost much of the versatility of the original line. For the purpose I use them for as show in the previous article, they don't provide as useful a tool.

The thing they do bring though is much better heads. The heads serve to be better generic mecha heads when coming up with your own designs. They are not as kiddish as the head designs before. There are also some nice armor bits that might work in the larger kit concept designs, though they attach in a different way.

Unless you are just into the new designs, I say these might make decent head and armor additions once they start going down on clearance. Below you can see a hasbro stock photo of dinobot Slug. Most of the heads for the dinobots have this sort of look and I think they are more useful in making new designs vs the old heads, but you will have a harder time making some of the other bits fit in your larger builds.
